WILLCOM and WILLCOM Okinawa are pleased to announce WILLCOM CORE as the brand name for the next generation PHS service, which the companies are working to introduce in 2009.

WILLCOM CORE (Communication Of Revolution and Evolution) is broadband Internet access with freedom created through a revolutionary microcell network technology - the first of its kind in the world. The network is comprised of 160 thousand base stations similar to PHS. WILLCOM is aiming to transform this service into a platform that will become the CORE of customers’ communication and business.
Targeted system specifications
1) Transmission speed Maximum of at least 100Mbps*1 for both uploading and downloading In addition, research is being conducted to improve the speed by a factor of 2 or 3.
2) Mobility At least 300km/hour*2 Possible to make broadband connections even from the Shinkansen (bullet train).
3) Stability Stable effective speed Drop in the effective speed is unlikely even in areas such as the middle of cities.
Evolved technology Growth technology that can continue to evolve and be developed.
*1 Maximum transmission speed when using the 30MHz x 2 (MIMO). The actual speed when the service is initially introduced is being verified separately.
*2 An evaluation was made using a fading simulator, which confirmed that it is possibility to maintain connections when moving at a speed of 300km/hour.
In order to introduce WILLCOM CORE as early as possible, WILLCOM is moving foreward with the development of the network system and handsets and an examination of actual service content. In commercializing WILLCOM CORE, WILLCOM is contributing to the development of communication technology not only within Japan, which includes the realization of extremely high speed wireless communication, elimination of the digital divide, and the introduction of information and communication technology in the fields of medicine and education, but is also actively working toward the internationalization of the service and the development and expansion of PHS.
