| Introducing the WILLCOM 03 - smartphone with fully-flat surface and two-mode touchscreen -
|
WILLCOM Inc., Sharp Corporation, and Microsoft Japan have jointly developed the WILLCOM 03, a stylish and easy-to-use smartphone which incorporates a fully-flat surface with no buttons and illuminated touchscreen. WILLCOM expects to introduce the WILLCOM 03 (WILLCOM zero three; model number WS020SH) in the latter part of the June 2008.
As the fully-flat buttonless surf liquid crystal screen surface increases the beauty of the device, the WILLCOM 03 is also as sleek and easy to use with the newly adopted illuminated touchscreen. In addition, the device is also different from traditional smartphones with a stylish exterior that comes in three expressive, vibrant colors – pink, lime, and gold.
The illuminated touchscreen takes touch control to a new level with making it possible to jump between two modes – one using a cursor key and the other a dial key. Using the new home menu, users can select by touch the desired function on an easy-to-view menu screen. Kana-kanji conversion is done with keitai shoin, which combined with the new phonebook, increases ease of use as a mobile phone. It is also easy to view digital TV with the internal 1seg tuner.
The device uses the latest Japanese edition of Microsoft® Windows Mobile® 6.1 Classic operating system, making the WILLCOM 03 the first device in Japan to use Windows Mobile 6.1.
In addition to a USB port and high-speed infrared communication IrSS®, the smartphone has internal Bluetooth® capability, ensuring expandability with peripheral devices. The WILLCOM 03 uses the Marvell® PXA270 processor, which has improved the performance of the device and makes it easy to operate both the hardware and OS. There are also other convenient functions such as business card reader and column reader, making it possible to photograph text with the camera and store the information as text data, quick memo, and the electronic dictionary software.
As for communication capability, the device is capable of both PHS (W-SIM compatible the PHS high-sped communications standard W-OAM; model number: RX420IN, included) and wireless LAN (IEEE802.11b/g), which allows users to choose how they will connect depending on the situation. As for PHS communication, with the 24-hour unlimited use WILLCOM FLAT-Rate Voice Plan3 and the Unlimited Access data plan, which provide data communication for a flat rate, the smartphone can be used freely for not only voice calls but for receiving and sending emails and accessing the Internet.
In addition to numerous functions, the device is being recommended to a wide-range of customers as an easy-to-use, enjoyable smartphone that is not only beautifully designed but also has numerous functions.
Furthermore, the announcement of the introduction of the WILLCOM 03 has received the endorsement of Jeff Krisa, the vice president of the Mobile Cellular Business Group of US-based Marvell Semiconductor Inc.
"With this new smartphone, WILLCOM is aiming to provide a mobile communication experience that seamlessly melds business functions with personal games and multimedia. We at Marvel Semiconductor Inc. are extremely pleased that WILLCOM has decided to continue to use the Marvell PXA application processor and that we can provide users with high-quality multimedia functions in addition to high quality, high performance, and low energy consumption."
