Development and Introduction of Ultra Mobile WILLCOM D4

The world's first communication device that includes both Windows Vista® and Intel® Centrino® Atom™ processor technology

With the support of both Microsoft Japan (headquarters located in Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO Yasuyuki Higuchi – referred to below as Microsoft) and Intel K.K. (headquarters located in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President Kazumasa Yoshida – referred to below as Intel), WILLCOM Inc. (headquarters located in Minato-ku, Tokyo; president Masaki Kikugawa – referred to below as WILLCOM) and Sharp Corporation (headquarters located in Osaka-shi, Osaka; President & COO Mikio Katayama – referred to below as Sharp) have developed the WILLCOM D4, a new mobile communication machine which is expected to go on sale in the middle of June 2008.

WILLCOM D4 not only uses Microsoft's latest operating system Windows Vista®, making it compatible with a wide-range of applications and Internet services, but is also the first(1) communication device to include Intel's Intel® Centrino® Atom™ processor technology, which provides superior mobile functionality and low power consumption.

WILLCOM provides seamless data transmission wherever our customers are using our services through reasonably-priced PHS data communication, which covers 99.4% of Japan, and land lines(2) that make use of built-in wireless LAN (IEEE802.11b/g) and LAN terminals with specialized cradles (sold separately). In addition, it is possible to enjoy WILLCOM's high-quality voice communication through the device by making use of a Bluetooth® handset (sold separately) and the included headset. The device is also compatible with WILLCOM's network service and provides other conveniences as a mobile device, including a remote lock service and automatic email reception, which automatically receives emails even if the Windows® device is hibernating or a sleep.

The device can be used in one of three different modes depending on the purpose – view mode with the keyboard closed, input mode with keyboard extended, and desk mode, which is similar to a laptop computer with a tilted screen. The device can be used in any mode depending on where it is being used – at home, in the office, or on the go. In addition, the screen is a Sharp 5-inch TFT liquid crystal display. The large, high-resolution screen allows one to display web pages without the horizontal scroll. The simultaneous display of the side-bar gadget, which informs users of items such as incoming mail, is also useful. Photos taken with the built in camera can also be enjoyed on the beautiful screen.

Since Microsoft's latest operating system Windows Vista® Home Premium with Service Pack 1 is installed, the device provides optimal stability and the highest level of security for mobile devices. It is also possible to make use of a wide range of peripheral devices, applications, and services, allowing users to enjoy a cutting-edge digital work-style and digital lifestyle. Furthermore, the device supports greater work efficiency through the advanced graphics functions of 2007 Microsoft® Office system, which is the latest version. A fully functioning version of 2007 Office system, which is used on computers at home and work, is installed, and it can be used for various purposes included creating presentations.

The device was developed based on Intel® Centrino® Atom™ processor technology, the latest technology newly developed by Intel for mobile internet, providing a new mobile Internet experience. Intel® Centrino® Atom™ processor technology incorporates Intel's smallest Intel® Atom™ Processor, built with the world's smallest(3) transistors, the energy efficient Intel® System Controller Hub companion chip, with built-in graphics functions, and wireless connectivity incorporating this processor technology and integrating the functions of all its components. The pocket-size WILLCOM D4 was designed to provide the most comfortable mobile Internet experience both away from home and on the move.

Tying the marketing scenario developed by the Windows Digital Lifestyle Consortium4, of which all four of the above companies are members, with WILLCOM D4 has resulted in a new method to utilize mobile communication machines for the digital life.

WILLCOM D4 is a revolutionary device that introduces a new mobile communication style through wireless broadband, which WILLCOM is aiming to realize through its next-generation PHS, and compatibility with Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) service, which integrates land-line communication and mobile communication. The WILLCOM D4 is a true expression of the future.

WILLCOM, Sharp, Microsoft, and Intel are providing the strategic new WILLCOM D4, which brings together each company's latest technology, as the next generation mobile communication machine that will develop a new mobile market.
