WILLCOM Announces Preliminary Acquisition of License for Wireless Station to Conduct Trials (Second Stage) of Next Generation PHS System
- Towards the Realization of Wireless Broadband -

WILLCOM, Inc. is pleased to announce that it has acquired a preliminary license for a wireless station to conduct second stage trials of its next generation PHS system from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications today, as part of its corporate activities to develop and introduce the system.

With this preliminary license, WILLCOM is now able to carry out second-stage trials on the system in the 2.5GHz spectrum, which is expected to be used for broadband wireless systems.

After acquiring the license, by August 2006, the Company plans to conduct trials with regard to the development and introduction of its next generation PHS system by focusing on testing the transmission of the OFDM system in the 2.5GHz range, and achieving a 20Mbps transmission speed.

WILLCOM strives to make the next generation system a practical one while turning wireless broadband into a reality. Accordingly, the Company intends to intensify efforts to popularize wireless broadband not only in Japan but also overseas through standardization and promotional activities at related international institutions and organizations such as ITU (International Telecommunication Union) and PHS Mou Group.

Trial Overview (Second Stage)
1. Planned Commencement of Trial
The trial is scheduled to commence in August 2006, after the acquisition of the license.

2. Trial Area
Antenna and base station trial facilities will be set up in two locations: a building in the Toranomon area of Tokyo and a suburban area.

3. Trial Overview
The trial will evaluate the performance of OFDM technology, a core technology of WILLCOM's next generation PHS system, in the 2.5 GHz spectrum, when adaptive array antenna technology is applied to it. The Company will also test the system's performance when MIMO technology is applied.
