Next generation PHS system demonstration experiment authorized

On Friday, 27 January, Willcom, Inc. received authorization from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications to proceed with a demonstration experiment of a radio station. The demonstration experiment is part of Willcom's efforts to develop and introduce a next generation PHS system.

From now, Willcom plans to acquire and evaluate data, centered on OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access) system transmission experiments and the like, that is necessary for the development and introduction of a next generation PHS system.

In addition to advancing activities aimed at realizing next generation PHS system, which brings into view the broad spectrum that ranges from the 1.9 GHz that is used today all the way to above 2 GHz, this experiment will also promote standardization efforts underway by concerned organizations and groups.

The general outline of the experiment is described below.

Demonstration experiment outline:-
1. Time it will take place
The first phase experiment is expected to take about 1 year.
A second phase test, designed to further evaluate the results of the first phase, is under consideration
2. Area where the experiment will take place
Experimental base station facilities and antenna will be placed on a building and inside a building in the Toranomon area of Tokyo.
3. Experiment outline
A test system using OFDMA technology, one of the core technologies of the next generation PHS system, will be built in cooperation with Adaptix, Inc. (headquarters: Seattle, Washington; CEO Michael J. Pisterzi) and its transmission capability under different environments, such as outside stationary, inside stationary, and outside moving at high speed, will be evaluated.
There are plans to hold an open house experiment for concerned companies and the media as soon as preparations are completed (in the February-March timeframe).
