WILLCOM Announces the “W-ZERO3” Next-Generation Mobile Communications Handset

- Features 3.7-inch High-Resolution Mobile ASV LCD(*1) and Sliding Keyboard -

WILLCOM, Inc. is pleased to announce the December launch of the “W-ZERO3” next generation mobile communications handset from Sharp Corporation - the first handset in the Japanese communications industry to feature the Microsoft® Windows Mobile™ 5.0 Japanese Version operating system, offering both the mobility of a handset with PC compatibility.

The “W-ZERO3” is a new communications tool that supports the ultra small wireless W-SIM module capable of voice and data communications and is the first in the industry(*2) to feature a 3.7-inch VGA (640 x 480 dot) high-resolution mobile ASV LCD screen. The operating system is Windows Mobile 5.0 for Pocket PC, offering high PC compatibility with the ability to edit Excel and Word files created on a PC and ability to view PowerPoint® and PDF files. The handset sports a 416-MHz PXA270 processor from Intel® that combines high processing speed with low power consumption. With built-in support for PHS communications as well as IEE802.11b wireless LAN connectivity, the handset can use different communications methods according to the situation and application.

Not only does the “W-ZERO3” support WILLCOM’s Light Mail direct sending email service, users can use their PC email address with the handset’s email software that supports the highly popular POP and SMTP(*3) formats. The handset is also capable of sending and receiving email with attachments. A PC-like QWERTY(*4) keyboard slides out enabling easy input of long messages. On the rear of the handset is a built-in digital camera with a resolution of 1.33 million effective pixels. Users can use the LCD screen as a viewfinder to make taking photos simple.

The “W-ZERO3” will support the WILLCOM Fixed Rate Plan for voice service and Data Fixed Rate Plan for Internet service, as well as the WILLCOM Wireless LAN Option service (available for free as a trial service through the end of May 2006) that will be launched in conjunction with the release of the “W-ZERO3”, thus providing customers with even greater convenience in mobile data communications.

The “W-ZERO3” is a product of the advanced technology from Sharp with its history of mobile handset development together with the variety of WILLCOM services that enable the simple exchange of various data anytime and anywhere including voice communications, Internet browsing, and document editing. This handset is suited for individuals and businesses as a powerful communications device within a mobile system.

The “W-ZERO3” is expected to greatly energize corporate mobile solutions. By collaborating with Microsoft and its wealth of developer resources for Windows, WILLCOM is pioneering a new mobile solution market and creating new added value for businesses. In conjunction with WILLCOM’s sales of the “W-ZERO3” to businesses, Microsoft along with Microsoft certified partners will provide powerful support in the development and penetration of mobile solutions.

The “W-ZERO3” is expected to truly demonstrate its value through mobile messaging made possible through compatibility with the Windows Server™ platform and the messaging and collaboration server software Exchange Server and in sales support and field support systems. Developers can use Visual Studio® to develop Windows Mobile applications and solutions for corporate systems, which is the same tool used to develop PC applications and solutions. The .NET Compact Framework can be used as the application platform, making the development of applications and solutions simple for experienced Windows developers.

WILLCOM Fixed Rate Plan
For a 2,900 yen monthly basic usage fee, users can make voice calls with other WILLCOM users and send and receive email via WILLCOM (including with other non-WILLCOM mobile phones and PCs) for free.

Data Fixed Rate
WILLCOM customers signed up for WILLCOM Fixed Rate Plan can also select this Internet fixed rate service that offers 4x packet data communications at a fixed price.

WILLCOM Wireless LAN Option
For users with a device that supports wireless LAN, this option service enables users to enjoy high-speed data communications from 700 yen per month in public wireless LAN service areas. The option fee will differ according to the service menu.
Major “W-ZERO3” Features
1.  Industry’s First 3.7-inch VGA (640 x 480 pixel) High-Resolution Mobile ASV LCD Screen and Internet Browser with Flash Support
This is the industry’ first handset to feature a VGA (640 x 480 pixel) screen. With the ability to display 4 times the amount of data compared to typical mobile phones (with 320 x 240 QVGA resolution), the “W-ZERO3” is capable of clearly displaying web pages, Excel/Word/PowerPoint® business documents, and photos taken by the built-in digital camera.

The handset features an Internet browser capable of viewing web pages designed for PCs and also supports Flash (application used to view web animation). Even away from the office, users can easily access and interact with news, blog, and auction sites typically viewed on PCs.

2.  First in Industry to Feature Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 for Pocket PC with High PC Compatibility

The “W-ZERO3” can handle Excel, Word, and PowerPoint® files created on a PC without modification. For video and music, Windows Media® Player 10 Mobile for Pocket PC is preinstalled. Users can transfer files from a PC to the handset, customize ringtones, and enjoy content even when outside the office. The handset can also be synchronized with Outlook®, so for example calendar data entered into the office PC and calendar data and memos entered into the “W-ZERO3” while outside the office can all be synchronized for centralized management of PC and “W-ZERO3” data.

The handset can be connected to a PC with the included USB cable, and users can select which items to synchronize. Files can also be transferred with drag and drop simplicity.

3.  High-Performance and Low Power Consumption Intel® 416-MHz PXA270 Processor
The Intel PXA270 is a processor optimized for mobile phones and PDAs that uses Intel XScale® technology. With its built-in multimedia processing and low power consumption features, the PXA270 is capable of high-speed processing while enabling long battery life.

4.  PC-Like Email Environment with POP/SMTP Mail Software and QWERTY Keyboard
With its POP/SMTP email software, the “W-ZERO3” enables users to send and receive email including attachments such as Excel and Word files from the same account used on a PC simply by setting up the account on the handset (including any IDs used by the computer or network). Even long messages can be typed smoothly using the QWERTY keyboard, and users can type out a quick email or text document while standing. In addition to text input, the handset can be operated with convenient touch screen response for moving between Internet screens and jumping to links.

5.  PHS (W-SIM) and Wireless LAN (IEE802.11b) Dual Communications Support
WILLCOM’s W-SIM PHS core module features built-in support not only for voice communications, 32k/64k PIAFS, 1x/4x packet switching, and flex change mode, but also IEEE802.11b wireless LAN connectivity. Ordinarily, the handset will be in PHS (W-SIM) mode for voice calls and email. When the handset is in a wireless LAN environment such as in a public hotspot or at home, the handset can be used for high-speed content downloading and video streaming. Thus users can choose between the two communications modes according to location and application. In addition, the handset can be connected to a PC with the included USB cable to function as a data modem. (PC must have driver installed.)

6.  Built-in Digital Camera with 1.33 Million Effective Pixels
The “W-ZERO3” features a 1/3-inch CMOS image sensor with approximately 1.33 million effective pixels that is capable of taking images in SXGA (1280 x 1024), VGA (640 x 480) and QVGA (320 x 240) resolution. The camera is activated and images are captured by pressing the shutter release button located on the side of the handset. In addition to standard mode, the camera features a continuous mode capable of capturing 5 images within a certain time period and a timer mode in which the shutter is released 5 seconds after the shutter release button is depressed. The camera can also record video, which is stored as a WMV file and can be viewed using Windows Media Player 10.
