DDI POCKET Launches 32kbps Data Communications Service; PIAFS Standard and Media Conversion Used to Perform at 32kbps

The DDI POCKET TELEPHONE group is pleased to announce that PHS data communications at 32kbps using the PIAFS standard method and the media conversion method (α-DATA) will be available from April 1, 1997.

Since the inception of the DDI POCKET TELEPHONE group, the intention has been to realize 32kbps data transmission, the main feature of PHS. In December 1996, the group began to offer 14.4kbps communications using wireless modems based on the media conversion (α-DATA).

The new service is a high-speed data communication platform that supports ISDN at 32kbps. DDI POCKET TELEPHONE will simultaneously deploy PIAFS and α-DATA standards. This will enhance the convenience of customers and to fast spread the use of PHS to perform high-speed data communications.

Customers using 14.4kbps wireless modem communications with handsets and card devices that support the α-DATA standard are able to upgrade to ISDN supported 32kbps data communications by changing the setup of the card. The communications fees of current POCKET TELEPHONE services will apply for the 32kbps data communications.

For PHS data communications, users will need a dedicated handset. The Group will provide a standard, called α-DATA32, that consolidates the PIAFS and media conversion as well as the current media conversion functions, and will approach the PHS handset manufacturers aggressively to adopt the standard.

Users can choose the standard to suit the communications environment. By featuring both the PIAFS standard method and the media conversion method, users may select the method that accommodates the wireless environment of the party communicated.

Handsets
The handsets that say α-DATA support wireless modem communications at 14.4kbps, wireless fax at 14.4kbps, and 32kbps wireless ISDN.

Those customers who already have handsets and card devices supporting α-DATA are able to perform 32kbps wireless ISDN communications.

Handsets and cards that support both α-DATA and PIAFS will say α-DATA32.
