POCKET TELEPHONE Introduces P-mail, a New Function on
α-PHS |
DDI POCKET
TELEPHONE Group is pleased to announce today that it will
introduce P-mail, a short text messaging, a new function
of α-PHS.
DDI POCKET TELEPHONE Group, in collaboration with the
handset manufacturers, has developed a common standard,
called α-PHS, which standardizes the transceiver
function to work with the handsets made by different manufacturers,digital
cordless handsets function and unique services such as
separated-bill services, all designed to enhance the convenience
of users.
The P-mail function introducing today will enable users
to transmit text of up to 20 characters, which is convenient
to leave simple messages when users are not able to talk
the phone.
Manufacturers will be releasing PHS handsets with P-mail.
DDI POCKET TELEPHONE believes as many manufacturers feature
P-mail on their PHS handsets, users' convenience will
be enhanced further. |

P-mail |

| As voice communications
in the mobile environment is spreading rapidly, the needs
for non-voice communications is also increasing substantially.
Female university students and other young people actively
engage in text messaging using pagers, and as there is
the increased use of e-mail due to the spread of PCs and
other information devices, and the use of data communications
inside companies. The major advantage of non-voice communications
is users are able to use their time effectively and to
jazz up the dialogs between individuals. |

| 2. Features of P-mail

Users of PHS
are able to send text messages of up to 20 characters,
composed of numbers, alphabets and Japanese Katakana characters.
P-mail is a feature that has been incorporated into the
handset*, and the same communications fees for the regular
POCKET TELEPHONE services, which users subscribe to, will
apply. Users will not be charged additional fees for using
the P-mail function.) |

The sender
of the messages will be able to check if they have been
received, which gives users a feeling of security. |

P-mail is
convenient to send information during meetings when users
are not able to talk on the phone. Users can use P-mail
for businesses and in private. |

by Mitsubishi Electric Corporation.
Sanyo Electric Corporation and Kyushu Matsushita Corporation
also plan to release PHS handsets featuring P-mail. DDI
POCKET TELEPHONE hopes the manufacturers will feature
P-mail in their future product releases. |
